Depression – Repression Slows Down Progression
Almost 10% of our population over the age of 18 suffers with some form of depression disorder. Living in a developed country like our own seems to put us more at risk as 15% on average of the population of developed countries have it. This may lead some to deduce that there may be something in our "development" that creates a depressive response.
In any case, signs of depression may include insomnia, oversleeping, lack of interest, indifference, unusual weight loss or gain, fatigue, tiredness, lack of mental focus, apathy, sadness, anxiety, and feelings of hopelessness, inadequacy, and worthlessness. Physical effects can include cardiovascular disease, hormonal imbalances, and even more serious conditions and diseases.
With all this being said, in many cases, depression begins with the suppression of feelings. This means that feelings that are uncomfortable or painful like worthlessness, inadequacy, betrayal, loneliness, insecurity, loss, helplessness, failure, rejection and abandonment are pushed down into the subconscious and hidden.
The hallmark of energy is movement. Emotions are a form of energy that must move. They should be felt, no matter how uncomfortable, and allowed into consciousness in order to be discharged. This would allow the feelings to cycle properly and be released.
Suppression occurs when we knowingly ignore or push down uncomfortable feelings into the subconscious and stop their cycling.
When we continue to "push down" these emotions when they are trying to be released from the subconscious, it is called repression. The more we repress, the stronger these emotions become. This can often lead to the addictions to drugs, medications, food, and even activity, that provides more energy to keep these unresolved feelings held hidden. Making spiritual progress is severely hampered by suppression and repression. Our ability to feel is also compromised.
There are effective ways to work through these emotions. Avoidance will only make life more difficult and miserable.
An effective therapist can be worth their weight in gold. The method that has been a huge blessing to me has been Rebirthing/Connected-Breathing.
